The year was 1990.
I was a couple of years in with my first full-time job as an insurance clerk and already overweight. This extra weight had accumulated over the years as a growing teenager.
My first attempt at weight loss did work. I managed to lose 0.5kg per week by running 5km three to four days per week. I did not run 5km straight away, but gradually built up to this amount as my fitness improved.
It felt great as my fitness improved and my work colleagues asked me what I was doing.
On top of the running I did two other things:
1. I drank 2 litres of water each day.
2. Near to Nil coffee or tea. Previously I could easily consume over fifteen cups per day.
Whilst I new I had the ability to lose weight. My ability to maintain a lower weight in my younger years was to prove a challenge.
